A bombshell twist has emerged following the tragic death of actress Hayden Panettiere, marking a startling new development in the case.

The Heroes and Nashville star died unexpectedly on Sunday, August 16, after being found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina. She was just 36 years old.

In the weeks since her death, further details have gradually emerged about her final moments and the ongoing investigation.

The latest development has added another unexpected layer to the case, with Hayden’s representatives declaring that there is ‘much more to this story’ than has been publicly discussed.

Hayden Panettiere’s life in the spotlight

Panettiere spent almost her entire life in the public eye after beginning her career in commercials when she was just 11 months old.

She appeared in numerous television programs and films as a child, including Remember the Titans, Raising Helen, and Ice Princess.

However, she became best known for playing cheerleader Claire Bennet in the hit superhero series Heroes.

Panettiere later starred as country singer Juliette Barnes in Nashville, earning two Golden Globe nominations for her performance.

She also played fan-favourite character Kirby Reed in the Scream franchise, appearing in Scream 4 before reprising the role more than a decade later in Scream VI.

The private battles behind her success

Behind her successful career, Panettiere experienced several deeply difficult periods in her personal life.

She previously spoke openly about experiencing postpartum depression following the birth of her daughter, Kaya, in December 2014, as well as her struggles with alcohol and op*oid addiction.

Panettiere shared Kaya with former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, whom she began dating in 2009.

The couple became engaged and welcomed their daughter before ending their relationship in 2018.

During one of the most difficult periods of her life, Panettiere agreed to give Klitschko full custody of Kaya, who went on to build a life with her father in Europe.

The actress later described being separated from her daughter as the ‘most gut-wrenching experience’ of her life.

However, Panettiere strongly rejected suggestions that she had abandoned Kaya.

She explained that after seeking treatment and beginning her recovery, she believed it would have been selfish to uproot her daughter from the stable life, friendships and education she had established abroad.

Panettiere said the pair remained closely connected through regular FaceTime calls and visits, adding that Kaya knew she was deeply loved by both of her parents.

Her life was struck by further tragedy in February 2023 when her younger brother and only sibling, actor Jansen Panettiere, died unexpectedly at the age of 28.

His family later revealed that he had died from complications involving an undiagnosed enlarged heart and his aortic valve.

Speaking about the devastating loss, Panettiere said she had always felt it was her responsibility to protect her younger brother.

She described losing Jansen as feeling like she had lost ‘half of my soul’ and revealed that the grief affected her so severely that her body began to swell.

Earlier this year, Panettiere released her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she spoke candidly about childhood fame, motherhood, addiction, recovery, domestic abuse, grief and the pressures she faced throughout her career.

Hayden Panettiere’s tragic final moments

Emergency services were called to the Judson Mill Lofts in Greenville shortly before 2pm on August 16.

Panettiere had reportedly been staying temporarily at a residence inside the building when she was discovered unresponsive.

First responders found the actress in cardiac arrest and immediately began CPR and advanced life-support measures.

Despite continuing their efforts for an extended period, they were unable to revive her.

Panettiere was pronounced dead at approximately 2:32pm.

A police officer who responded to the property spoke to Panettiere’s on-again, off-again partner Brian Hickerson and his brother, Zach, who were both present.

According to the subsequently released police report, Hickerson showed the officer a bag containing medication he said Panettiere had been taking.

The names of the medications were redacted from the publicly available document.

Investigators also obtained a search warrant and examined surveillance footage connected to the Greenville property.

Emergency dispatch audio reportedly included a reference to a possible overdose while paramedics were attempting to resuscitate the actress.

However, the police report stated that it was not known whether Panettiere had consumed drugs or alcohol before her death.

Questions surround her sudden death

Greenville Police previously said its preliminary investigation had found no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.

An autopsy was completed the day after Panettiere’s death, with officials confirming that they found no injuries or trauma that contributed to her passing.

The US Dr*g Enforcement Administration has since joined Greenville Police in investigating the actress’s death.

Amid speculation surrounding the case, Panettiere’s representatives issued a statement condemning people who had used her passing to spread gossip and accusations.

They urged anyone with legitimate information to contact law enforcement rather than sharing unverified claims online.

Her representatives added: “There is much more to this story than what is currently being discussed publicly, and those closest to Hayden are actively cooperating with the ongoing investigation to help ensure that the truth comes to light and that justice is properly served.”

Bombshell twist emerges in the investigation

The investigation has now reportedly extended to the other side of the country.

According to Entertainment Weekly, a witness reportedly saw more than six federal agents entering Panettiere’s West Hollywood home on August 25.

A witness who claimed to have been inside the building said the agents possessed a warrant to search the actress’s residence.

The precise reason for the reported search and what, if anything, was removed from the property have not been publicly disclosed.

The Los Angeles Police Department was approached for comment, while a spokesperson for the FBI’s Los Angeles office said the agency was unaware of a search at the address.

No individual has been accused of wrongdoing in connection with Panettiere’s death.

Despite the completed autopsy and the ongoing investigation, her official cause and manner of death have not yet been determined.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office is awaiting further studies, including toxicology testing, which could take between eight and 12 weeks to complete.

Although an overdose was mentioned during the emergency dispatch, authorities have not confirmed that Panettiere suffered an overdose or that one contributed to her death.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
