Family Betrayal
The first three days in Lancaster were entirely silent, save for the hum of the refrigerator and the rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock I had brought with me. The new house was smaller, warmer, and perfectly manageable. I spent my mornings organizing the kitchen, placing Robert’s silver spoons into velvet-lined drawers, and watching the birds gather at the feeder outside my window. I simply set the phone face down on the laminate counter and took a slow sip of tea.
