J.K. Rowling has made it clear she is not prepared to forgive Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe following the devastating breakdown of their relationship.

The author watched the two stars grow up after they were cast as Hermione Granger and Harry Potter in the blockbuster movie franchise.

Together, they helped bring Rowling’s fictional world to life and became two of the most recognizable names associated with the series.

However, their relationship has since deteriorated dramatically following an intensely public disagreement.

Rowling has now told the actors they can ‘save their apologies,’ while Radcliffe has admitted that the fallout makes him ‘really sad.’

Watson later appeared to leave the door open to reconciliation, but Rowling responded with a blistering statement that made her feelings unmistakably clear.

The stars who brought Harry Potter to life

Radcliffe was just 11 years old when he was cast as the titular wizard in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Watson was similarly young when she landed the life-changing role of Hermione Granger alongside Radcliffe and Rupert Grint.

The trio subsequently appeared in eight movies together between 2001 and 2011, transforming them into global stars.

The disagreement began in 2020 after Rowling responded to an article that used the phrase ‘people who menstruate.’

She appeared to object to the publication avoiding the word ‘women’ and subsequently defended her views concerning the importance of biological s*x.

Her remarks prompted a fierce backlash, with critics describing them as harmful to transgender people.

Radcliffe then released a statement through LGBTQ+ s**cide prevention charity The Trevor Project declaring: “Transgender women are women.”

He also apologized to readers who felt their relationship with the Harry Potter books had been damaged by the controversy.

Watson issued her own statement shortly afterwards, writing: “Trans people are who they say they are.”

She added that transgender people deserved to live without continually having their identities questioned.

Although Radcliffe firmly rejected Rowling’s position, he acknowledged her profound influence on his life and insisted that his response should not be portrayed as a personal feud.

Watson did not mention Rowling directly, instead focusing entirely on expressing her support for transgender people.

Harry Potter cast divided over controversy

Radcliffe and Watson were not the only stars to address Rowling’s comments, with the controversy creating a noticeable divide among the wider Harry Potter cast.

Rupert Grint said he ‘firmly’ stood with the transgender community, declaring that trans women are women and trans men are men.

However, Grint later described his relationship with Rowling as more complicated than a simple public feud.

Other cast members offered more explicit support for Rowling.

Evanna Lynch, who portrayed Luna Lovegood, said the author had supported her during her recovery from an eating disorder and described her as a generous and loving person.

Although Lynch expressed compassion for transgender people, she argued that the public should give Rowling ‘more grace’ and listen to her concerns.

Helena Bonham Carter also defended the author against the backlash, saying Rowling had been ‘hounded’ and should be allowed to hold an opinion shaped by her own experiences.

Ralph Fiennes, who played Lord Voldemort, similarly described the verbal abuse aimed at Rowling as ‘appalling,’ although his comments focused predominantly on the hostility she had received rather than explicitly endorsing all her views.

Tom Felton has largely avoided taking a firm position. In 2025, he said the controversy had not affected his relationship with the franchise and emphasized his gratitude for the joy Rowling’s work had brought to several generations.

Rowling has reserved her strongest public criticism for Watson and Radcliffe, although Grint also appeared to become a target in March 2025.

When asked online which actor or actress instantly ruined a movie for her, Rowling responded with ‘three guesses,’ apparently referring to the franchise’s three leading stars.

However, Rowling later clarified that she had ‘nothing but deep affection’ for some members of the cast who had remained supportive.

She did not identify those actors by name, meaning it remains unclear precisely which former stars she continues to consider friends.

Harry Potter fans turn against the franchise

The backlash quickly spread beyond social media as some longtime Harry Potter fans began distancing themselves from the franchise.

Several people revealed that they were covering or removing tattoos inspired by the books, explaining that they no longer felt comfortable displaying artwork associated with Rowling.

One tattoo artist even offered to design cover-ups in return for donations to a charity supporting transgender women of color.

Other fans pledged to stop purchasing merchandise, watching the movies, or financially supporting future projects connected to the author.

The controversy also placed pressure on the companies behind the wider Wizarding World.

Universal Parks & Resorts, which operates several Wizarding World of Harry Potter attractions at its theme parks, responded by emphasizing that its values included ‘diversity, inclusion and respect’ for its guests and employees.

The opening of the Ministry of Magic attraction at Universal Epic Universe later prompted renewed debate among fans about supporting a destination built around Rowling’s intellectual property.

Under Universal’s licensing agreement, fees and royalties are paid to the Harry Potter rights holder, including royalties connected to licensed merchandise and other themed purchases.

Calls for a boycott have also followed the development of HBO’s new Harry Potter television adaptation, on which Rowling serves as an executive producer.

Some viewers have threatened to avoid the series entirely, while members of its cast and creative team have faced criticism for agreeing to participate.

J.K. Rowling tells stars to ‘save their apologies’

The dispute escalated again in April 2024 following the publication of the Cass Review.

The Cass Review was an independent examination of NHS gender identity services for children and young people in England.

Its final report raised concerns about the limited evidence surrounding some treatments and called for more research and a more holistic approach to patients’ physical and mental health.

After Rowling discussed its findings on X, one follower said they were waiting for Radcliffe and Watson to offer her a public apology, ‘safe in the knowledge’ that the author would forgive them.

However, Rowling immediately rejected that assumption.

“Not safe, I’m afraid,” she responded.

Rowling said celebrities who had supported the movement could ‘save their apologies’ for detransitioners and vulnerable women who relied upon single-s*x spaces.

Neither Radcliffe nor Watson had offered an apology, and both actors had previously expressed broader support for transgender people rather than commenting specifically on the medical transition of children.

Daniel Radcliffe responds

Radcliffe addressed his fractured relationship with Rowling shortly afterwards, revealing that the situation made him ‘really sad.’

However, he maintained that Rowling’s influence on his life did not mean he was required to share her beliefs.

He also revealed that he had not spoken directly to the author since the public disagreement began.

Radcliffe explained that he had worked with The Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization providing crisis support and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ+ young people, for years and felt compelled to speak out after meeting those who had found comfort in the Harry Potter franchise.

When asked directly about Rowling’s remark, Radcliffe declined to engage further with the author.

“I will continue to support the rights of all LGBTQ people, and have no further comment than that,” he said.

Emma Watson breaks her silence

Watson finally discussed the rift at length during a September 2025 appearance on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast.

The actress maintained her support for the transgender community but said her disagreement with Rowling did not erase the positive personal relationship they had previously shared.

“I really don’t believe that by having had that experience and holding the love and support and views that I have, mean that I can’t and don’t treasure Jo,” Watson said.

She added: “I can love her. I can know she loved me. I can be grateful to her.”

Watson appeared to leave the door open to reconciliation, saying she hoped people who disagreed with her could still love her and that she could continue loving those whose opinions differed from her own.

However, she admitted she was particularly upset that a direct conversation between herself and Rowling had never taken place.

“I think the thing I’m most upset about is that a conversation was never made possible,” Watson said.
