Now the beloved story has returned for a new generation \u2014 but this isn\u2019t simply a remake of the television series audiences watched throughout the 1970s and early \u201980s.<\/p>\n

Netflix\u2019s new\u00a0Little House on the Prairie<\/em>\u00a0goes back to\u00a0Laura Ingalls Wilder\u2019s original books<\/strong>\u00a0for its foundation. The first season follows Charles, Caroline, Mary and Laura Ingalls as they attempt to build a new life near Independence, Kansas.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s where longtime viewers may notice the biggest difference.<\/p>\n

This Isn\u2019t Michael Landon\u2019s Little House<\/h2>\n

The original series became inseparable from Michael Landon. He starred as Charles Ingalls and helped shape the warm, emotional television drama that generations still remember.<\/p>\n

The new adaptation takes another path.<\/p>\n

Rather than trying to reproduce Landon\u2019s series, showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine has returned to Wilder\u2019s books and expanded the story of frontier life. The series also gives considerably more attention to the Osage people and the complicated history surrounding westward settlement.<\/p>\n

Luke Bracey, who now plays Charles Ingalls, has also explained that returning to the books is one of the main distinctions between the two versions.<\/p>\n

Yet the heart of the story remains familiar:\u00a0family, survival, hope and trying to build a better life together.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Original Little House Hasn\u2019t Been Forgotten<\/h2>\n

There is also a wonderful connection to the show older viewers remember.<\/p>\n

Alison Arngrim \u2014 the original Nellie Oleson \u2014 actually appears in the new series in a surprise cameo.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And original cast members haven\u2019t necessarily viewed the new adaptation as something meant to replace their show. Arngrim recently said that the different versions can coexist, while Dean Butler \u2014 remembered as Almanzo Wilder \u2014 praised the new production\u2019s storytelling and said he believes Landon would likely have appreciated its approach.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s perhaps the best way for longtime fans to approach it.<\/p>\n

The Michael Landon series remains the\u00a0Little House<\/em>\u00a0millions grew up loving. This new version isn\u2019t trying to erase those memories \u2014 it\u2019s returning to Laura Ingalls Wilder\u2019s world and telling the story from a different perspective.<\/p>\n

And more is already coming:\u00a0Netflix has renewed the series for Season 2<\/strong>, which will introduce a new Nellie Oleson as the story moves toward Walnut Grove.<\/p>\n
