One Good Turn<\/em><\/b>\u00a0(1931) starring Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, James Finlayson, Mary Carr<\/h2>\n

Our earthly possessions are slowly getting less and less \u2026<\/h3>\n

At the beginning of\u00a0One Good Turn<\/i>,\u00a0Laurel and Hardy<\/a>\u00a0are victims of the Depression, living on the outskirts of town with their meager possessions \u2013 an old, run-down automobile, an older army surplus tent, the clothes on their back and some spare shirts.\u00a0 While Stanley (Stan Laurel<\/a>) is cooking soup for lunch, Ollie (Oliver Hardy<\/a>) is washing out their clothes in a nearby stream.\u00a0Oliver, however, makes the mistake of asking Stan to \u201cdo something and help me\u201d \u2026. And in the process of hanging\u00a0<\/strong>up the clothes, he trips and knocks the tent into the fire<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In an inspired clown moment, he grabs a drinking cup, walks past Ollie and the stream of water to a water pump, where\u00a0he fills the cup with water and dashes back<\/strong>.\u00a0 He repeats this twice, finally asking Ollie if he has another cup \u2013 why? asks Ollie. \u00a0\u201cBecause the tent is on fire!\u201d \u00a0They dash back to the remains of the tent and\u00a0Stan, now that things are too late, flings the soup on the fire in a useless attempt at saving the tent<\/strong>.\u00a0 Ollie, tempting fate, asks how could things get any worse. And the camera obligingly answers, but showing their clothes on the clothesline, shrunk by the heat of the tent flames, now worthless.<\/p>\n

The widow, the play, and the plot<\/h3>\n

With no other options,\u00a0Stan and Oliver drive into town to beg for food<\/strong>.\u00a0 At the same time, a little old lady (Mary Carr) is\u00a0rehearsing a scene for her community theater with a friend (Jimmy Finlayson<\/a>), where the cold-hearted banker is going to foreclose her mortgage<\/strong>.\u00a0 This is the house where\u00a0Stan and Ollie decide to stop and ask for a handout<\/strong>\u00a0since they \u201chaven\u2019t had a meal in three days \u2013 yesterday, today and tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

The kind-hearted old woman obliges, and Stan volunteers Ollie\u2019s services to cut up some lumber for her. After a short disagreement, Stan starts chopping the wood \u2013 with\u00a0flying lumber landing on Oliver\u2019s head<\/strong>, in a very funny scene.\u00a0 As Laurel and Hardy go inside to eat the lunch prepared for them \u2014 a funny scene in itself, as Stan helps himself to the lion\u2019s share of\u00a0the food. \u00a0Mary Carr and James Finlayson practice their scene again where she can\u2019t pay her mortgage.\u00a0 Laurel and Hardy overhear the rehearsal and\u00a0think that their kindly old benefactor is about to be thrown out of her home, for the lack of one hundred dollars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

One good deed deserves another<\/h3>\n

Being the good-natured duo that they are,\u00a0Stan and Ollie see only one thing to do<\/strong>; they drive their car downtown and proceed to gather a crowd, and\u00a0auction off their car to raise the $100<\/strong>\u00a0dollars that their hostess needs.\u00a0 In the midst of the bidding, when it\u2019s at the needed one hundred dollars, someone asks Stan what time it is and he answers \u201c1:25\u201d \u2013 which, of course, sounds like one hundred and twenty-five, and becomes the high bid.\u00a0 The crowd disperses, and Oliver realizes that there is no money for the old woman.\u00a0 To add insult to injury, during their auction a drunk has accidentally put his wallet in Stan\u2019s pocket, which Oliver finds \u2013 with $100 in it!\u00a0\u00a0Oliver jumps to the conclusion that Stan is the thief<\/strong>, and after a verbal tirade he drags Stan back to the woman\u2019s house, in order to have Stan \u201cconfess\u201d.<\/p>\n

Once they arrive, the woman explains that there is no stolen money and no foreclosure.\u00a0\u00a0Oliver is red-faced and embarrassed, at \u201chaving committed a faux-pas.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Stan, however, has had his ire raised, and has had enough!\u00a0\u00a0In a very comic finale, Stan attacks Ollie<\/strong>, who hides in the woodshed.<\/p>\n

Stan strikes back!<\/h3>\n

\u201cYou come out!\u201d
\n\u201cI will not!\u00a0 You leave me alone!\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Stan has armed himself with an axe, and the frightened Oliver refuses to come out; undaunted,\u00a0Stan begins attacking the woodshed, until it falls down around the frightened Oliver<\/strong>, pinning him with his head sticking through what\u2019s left of the roof.\u00a0 Getting his revenge,\u00a0Stan starts chopping wood again, sending lumber crashing down on Ollie\u2019s head \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>and finally on his own!<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a very funny Laurel and Hardy film, and I frankly don\u2019t see how they could improve it.\u00a0 I rate it 5 clowns out of 5.\u00a0 I enjoyed it, as did my children, and hope that you do as well.<\/p>\n

Oliver thinks that Stan has stolen money from the widow<\/h3>\n

\nOliver (Oliver Hardy)<\/b>: \u201cWhat\u201d. Don\u2019t \u00a0try to alibi. You know you stole this money from that old lady. Why guilt is written all over you.
\nStanley (Stan Laurel)<\/b>: What do you mean?
\nOliver (Oliver Hardy)<\/b>: I mean that you\u2019re going to give this money back and make a full confession!
\nStanley (Stan Laurel)<\/b>: A confession of what?
\nOliver (Oliver Hardy)<\/b>: And to think after all these years I\u2019ve been fostering a common thief. A viper in my bosom!
