Morgan Fairchild was one of television\u2019s most glamorous stars, while Johnny Carson was the undisputed king of late-night television.<\/p>\n

For a time, the two were romantically involved \u2014 and according to Fairchild, people around Hollywood thought the relationship might lead to marriage.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not what happened.<\/p>\n

Fairchild recently revealed that\u00a0she was the one who ended the relationship with Carson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For years, she says, many people simply assumed America\u2019s most famous late-night host had dumped the beautiful blonde actress.<\/p>\n

Fairchild knew otherwise.<\/p>\n

And apparently, so did\u00a0Bette Davis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Fairchild recalled attending a large Hollywood gala when she suddenly felt someone tap her on the shoulder.<\/p>\n

She turned around.<\/p>\n

Standing there was Bette Davis, dressed for the evening.<\/p>\n

The legendary actress leaned toward Fairchild and delivered a characteristically direct verdict:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were quite right to dump him.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fairchild was stunned.<\/p>\n

It sounded, she later joked, like something straight out of a Bette Davis movie.<\/p>\n

But the moment meant something deeper to her.<\/p>\n

Davis knew Carson personally from her numerous appearances on\u00a0The Tonight Show<\/em>, and Fairchild felt that Davis understood something many others hadn\u2019t: Carson hadn\u2019t rejected Fairchild.<\/p>\n

Fairchild had made the decision herself.<\/p>\n

That unexpected encounter wasn\u2019t the end of their story.<\/p>\n

Fairchild later worked with Davis on the 1983 pilot of\u00a0Hotel<\/em>. She arrived nervous, having heard plenty of stories about the formidable Hollywood legend.<\/p>\n

Instead, Davis surprised her again.<\/p>\n

She praised Fairchild\u2019s acting and even singled out her performance in\u00a0The Seduction<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Fairchild recalled that after spending the day talking, Davis essentially \u201cadopted\u201d her.<\/p>\n

The two women remained friends through the 1980s.<\/p>\n

Decades later, Fairchild still remembers that first blunt show of support.<\/p>\n

It was only a few words from one Hollywood legend to another rising star.<\/p>\n
