An iconic actress who starred on\u00a0The Waltons<\/em>\u00a0and earned four\u00a0Emmy Awards<\/a>\u00a0during the height of her career is celebrating her 87th\u00a0birthday<\/a>.\u00a0Michael Learned<\/strong>, who played Olivia Walton on\u00a0The Waltons<\/em><\/a>, was born on April 9, 1939.<\/p>\n

The Waltons<\/em>\u00a0aired from 1972 to 1981, and Learned starred on the show through eight of its nine seasons. In September 2025, Learned talked with\u00a0Steve Kmetko<\/strong>\u00a0on his\u00a0Still Here Hollywood<\/em><\/a>\u00a0podcast<\/a>\u00a0about her decision to leave when she did.<\/p>\n

Learned said she never regretted her decision to leave\u00a0The Waltons<\/em>. “They didn’t know what to do with me…as an actor, it was just boring,” she admitted.<\/p>\n

She recalled that as she bid farewell to the series, “I wept because we were such a family, even the crew, we were all really close and like a family.” However, Learned added, “But on the other hand, I got tired of [the show].”<\/p>\n

Learned may have grown bored by the lack of storyline for her character on\u00a0The Waltons<\/em>, but she did\u00a0earn three Emmy Awards<\/a>\u00a0for her work. She won the best or outstanding actress in a drama category in 1973, 1974, and 1976.<\/p>\n

Learned had been acting for a decade before landing\u00a0The Waltons<\/em>. Despite all of her previous experience, playing Olivia Walton was the role that catapulted her to stardom.<\/p>\n

In 1981, Learned debuted as Mary Benjamin on the series\u00a0Nurse<\/em>. She won an Emmy in 1982 for that role, too.<\/p>\n

After\u00a0Nurse<\/em>\u00a0ended, Learned continued to act. She appeared in dozens of primetime series, and Learned took on some soap opera work over the years, as well. Some may remember that in 2011, Learned took on the role of Katherine Chancellor on\u00a0The Young and the Restless<\/em>\u00a0for 11 episodes.<\/p>\n

Despite leaving before\u00a0The Waltons\u00a0<\/em>before the end of its run, Learned did reconnect with the cast for some subsequent\u00a0Waltons<\/em>movies<\/a>. The last acting role Learned took on was to play Catherine Dahmer, the\u00a0grandmother<\/a>\u00a0of serial killer\u00a0Jeffrey Dahmer<\/a>, in five episodes of the 2022 series\u00a0Monster.<\/em><\/p>\n

When Learned was asked about her legacy during the Kmetko podcast, she replied, “I don’t care. I don’t need to have a legacy. I just want my kids to speak kindly of me, and they do.”<\/p>\n
