Hyacinth Bouquet had spent three weeks preparing for what she confidently described as \u201cthe most refined garden gathering this side of Buckingham Palace.\u201d Richard privately called it \u201canother expensive afternoon,\u201d though only in the safety of his own thoughts. The lawn had been trimmed with military precision, every rose bush had been encouraged to bloom through constant conversation from Hyacinth, and the finest Royal Doulton china with the hand-painted periwinkles had been polished until it gleamed in the morning sun.<\/p>\n

Richard carried yet another folding chair into the garden.<\/p>\n

\u201cHyacinth,\u201d he sighed, \u201chow many people are actually coming?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cQuality, Richard, not quantity. Distinguished company requires room to appreciate elegance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo\u2026 six chairs for four guests?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne must never appear cramped.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elizabeth nervously appeared at the side gate carrying a plate of homemade scones wrapped in a tea towel.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope I\u2019m not early.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dear Elizabeth,\u201d Hyacinth beamed. \u201cPunctuality is the hallmark of breeding.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elizabeth smiled, relieved.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, while stepping onto the patio, she caught her foot on a flowerpot and only just managed to save the scones.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe scones survived,\u201d Hyacinth observed. \u201cExcellent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard quietly rescued the flowerpot before Hyacinth noticed.<\/p>\n

Just then Emmet arrived, looking as though he would rather be conducting an orchestra than attending another one of Hyacinth\u2019s social events.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Hawksworth!\u201d Hyacinth declared. \u201cYou have arrived just in time to admire the symmetry of my hydrangeas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rose leaned over the fence.<\/p>\n

\u201cGarden party.\u201d<\/p>\n

Onslow grinned.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat means posh sandwiches.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hyacinth overheard him immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an invitation-only occasion!\u201d<\/p>\n

Onslow nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cDidn\u2019t ask for one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before Richard could move, an unexpected honking echoed down the street.<\/p>\n

Everyone turned.<\/p>\n

A large white goose waddled confidently through the open gate as though it owned the property.<\/p>\n

Richard blinked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hyacinth smiled uncertainly.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will undoubtedly continue along its way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, the goose marched straight toward the tea table.<\/p>\n

Elizabeth whispered, \u201cDoes\u2026 does it look hungry?\u201d<\/p>\n

The goose answered by snatching an entire cucumber sandwich directly from the serving plate.<\/p>\n

Onslow, watching from next door, burst into laughter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell,\u201d he shouted, \u201cit\u2019s got better taste than I expected!\u201d<\/p>\n

Hyacinth stood frozen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat goose,\u201d she announced, \u201cis trespassing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The goose looked directly at her\u2026 spread its enormous wings\u2026 and let out a thunderous hiss that sent every guest instinctively stepping backward.<\/p>\n

Elizabeth squealed.<\/p>\n

Richard dropped the sugar bowl.<\/p>\n

Emmet quietly calculated the fastest route to his car.<\/p>\n

Then the goose spotted the gleaming silver cake stand in the centre of the table\u2026<\/p>\n
