For more than four decades, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have done something Hollywood couples aren\u2019t exactly famous for: they stayed together.<\/p>\n

But years ago, Goldie was already explaining why their relationship worked \u2014 and at the time, many people were more interested in asking why they weren\u2019t married.<\/p>\n

Goldie and Kurt became a couple in 1983 after reconnecting while working on\u00a0Swing Shift<\/em>. Both had experienced marriage before, but they chose a different path together.<\/p>\n

As far back as 1987, Goldie described an idea that would become central to their relationship: they loved each other without giving up their individual identities.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are separate entities,\u201d she said at the time.<\/p>\n

Years later, she explained it even more clearly. Goldie said a lasting relationship wasn\u2019t really about marriage. To her, it was about compatibility, communication and two people genuinely wanting the relationship to work.<\/p>\n

And there was another important part:\u00a0not losing yourself in the other person.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That may have been what people didn\u2019t fully appreciate when she first said it.<\/p>\n

Goldie wasn\u2019t suggesting that commitment didn\u2019t matter. She was describing a different kind of commitment \u2014 one where two people remained together because they continued choosing one another.<\/p>\n

She has also been remarkably open about the fact that their relationship isn\u2019t perfect. They\u2019ve disagreed. They\u2019ve gotten angry with each other. They\u2019ve had to listen, adjust and keep working at it.<\/p>\n

Yet they stayed.<\/p>\n

Together, Goldie and Kurt built a blended family that includes Kate Hudson, Oliver Hudson, Boston Russell and their son Wyatt Russell. And while Hollywood watched and repeatedly wondered when a wedding would happen, the couple apparently never needed one to prove what they already had.<\/p>\n

More than 40 years later, Goldie\u2019s old words sound very different.<\/p>\n

Maybe she was telling everyone the secret all along:<\/p>\n
