Jack Elam needed almost no dialogue to create one of the most unforgettable openings in Western history.<\/p>\n

In Sergio Leone\u2019s 1968 classic\u00a0Once Upon a Time in the West<\/em>, Elam plays one of three gunmen waiting silently at a lonely railroad station. His most famous opponent isn\u2019t another cowboy \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s a fly crawling across his face.<\/strong><\/p>\n

To capture the scene, Elam later recalled that\u00a0apricot jam was placed on his beard to attract real flies<\/strong>, with filming taking roughly a day and a half before Leone got what he wanted.<\/p>\n

But Elam\u2019s famous wandering eye had a much deeper story.<\/p>\n

A childhood accident left him blind in his left eye. Years later, while working as an accountant, doctors warned that the strain of paperwork could endanger his remaining good eye.\u00a0He eventually left accounting and turned toward acting.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The feature that once complicated his life became part of the face audiences would never forget.<\/p>\n

Elam went on to appear in scores of Westerns and television shows, including\u00a0Gunsmoke<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Bonanza<\/em>, before his death in 2003 at 82.<\/p>\n
